‘I am proud to be a Costripper’ - a line that I once heard from this certain Cosplayer. What is exactly the difference between a Costripper and Cosplayer? (very mind boggling >:D) According to her, a Costripper is somenone who cosplays but does not join catwalks or any cosplay contests. A cosplayer on the other hand, is someone who has already joined any competition related to cosplaying. True. I say that I agree to this statement. Either way, both are still considered as cosplayers :)).

I have already featured her in one of my blogs before. Now, I’m giving a full article about her >.<

Getting to know her (*evil smirk >:D)..

I proudly present Ms. Jeyel Tecson. Very natural! I’ve been following this cosplayer since last year. She started from scratch (which what I really admired about her) and she basically learned her skills as a cosplayer through experience on every cons attended. She went to minor conventions and sees it as a training ground for her then tries to discover new things that may enhance her cosplays for the major events. She learns by ocular observations and asking other cosplayers for tips on where or how to do this and that. One more thing that I like about her, she does her own props (you’ll see one later hoho). She is very creative and artistic so to speak. No wonder that the charcters she chooses to portray are the ones who are rarely seen at conventions. She has this little thing called ‘I wanna be unique’ hehe.

What is cosplay for her? - ‘Cosplaying is the highest fandom a person could give to a certain character’. What does she mean by it?? To go deeper, as we all know, there are certain levels to idolizing someone or something. Here’s one example for cosplaying: watches anime videos/reads mangas/play videogames »> repeats certain favorite parts until you memorize its lines »> tries to immitate the characters you idolize by acting like them »> dressing up like them, which of course could now be called ‘cosplay’. A summary of what she told me (oh men! this girl is deep! wew)

Off to her Cosplays! yay!..

First on the list. Rinoa from Final Fantasy VIII. Who on earth does not know this character?! I did LOL. I am not a big fan of the Final Fantasy series. The only FF series that I finished playing was FF9 (I just find the characters cute). Now back to her. Why Rinoa? hoho .. I found out that she had a big crush on Squall (Rinoa’s partner). Still, why Rinoa? she can’t be Squall of course so she passed it to her real life partner to cosplay (how cute! they’re a couple!). On the bright side, her attitude perfectly fits that of Rinoa’s character. So imagine this, your cosplaying a character which is basically you at the same time. No sweat! haha. Nice pick for her and two thumbs up!.

You see, picking a character should also fit your personality or likes. If you don’t like the character, then don’t even think of cosplaying him/her. It would be an EPIC failure!. With regards to her, she did it effortlessly. Moving about the grounds just like the Rinoa you see on game.

Next up.. CC from Code Geass. She has three versions for this character. Let’s start with Empress CC. Hmm. An Empress. I’m very impressed! She pulled it off. Looking at her costume, I think it’s quite heavy. Still, she remained calm and elegant through the day just like an empress.

This one here is her Witch CC. She’s wearing a black dress made of satin. What’s up with black dress’, green wigs and white complexion? They glow! LOL. This one’s from a fan art.

Last on the CC lineup is her Black Knight CC. She bought this from another cosplayer. Good thing they almost have the same size. I never saw her wear this one on any of the cons attended. She wore this on one of her photo shoots.

So.. why CC?? a very odd character for her. IMO, this character doesn’t fit any of her attitudes. Through persistent asking of questions to her, I found out that she didn’t pick this character to cosplay. Her partner, the Squall cosplayer, has been wanting to cosplay Lelouch. Therefore, being the understanding and generous partner she is, she agreed to be his CC without any hesitation. (How sweet di ba?!) Nah! I think she also agreed to do this because CC is a poker face LOL. She doesn’t need to smile for the whole event. Very smart!

Now! Now! My favorite among her cosplays.. >:) oyeah! .. Ciel Phantomhive from Kuroshitsuji. First time she crossplayed and damn! is she pretty or what?! let me rephrase that .. Is he handsome or what?! LOL. Nailed it! After a year of cosplaying, she has turned into what you call a ‘butterfly’ people. She has incorporated everything she learned from the past just to make this character come into life without any fail. Kudos!

According to her, she really liked the anime so she decided to cosplay this character. But of course, as expected from her, she didn’t just do the simple common look of the character but instead she did a research to find an exotic piece worn by Ciel. Thus, I give you…

So far, she has worn 5 different costumes in the past year. Her cosplay life is starting to bloom and she currently has a lot of cosplays lined up. I bet it’ll be better than the ones featured. I am so looking forward to another one of her amazing cosplays >.< ..

TOYCON 2011 Galore

Toys. One of the few objects wherein people of different age, gender or race appreciates and feels contentment in any way. Recently, I have attended a convention for toys, the oh so grande TOYCON 2011. There were lots of booths and exhibits that displays action figures of different sizes and characters.

First stop, tickets!!! hoho .. the ticket was sold at 100php. Not bad at all. I would pay a 100 pesos to see or buy toys that I rarely find in stores. What’s cooler than collectible items!.

(One big ticket! LOL )

Basically it’s obvious that they have collectible items based on the stamp given before you enter the event grounds.

For the event proper, I think 2 or 3 halls were occupied? not really sure hehe. Anyways, half of the room was for the exhibits and booths then half of it was for the event activities. There are actually 2 stages built. One for the band and the other was for the cosplay contest. And of course, the food stalls! can’t get enough of the shawarma! :)) (just like to add that one up). There were different bands (i think, cos’ I kept seeing different band members :P), on stage that was so good in singing anime songs (which I definitely like!). They rock!

One thing that is so great about this event: FREE COKE! yeah! (I’m a COKE fan, so what?! XD)

Off to the real thing. Cosplayers!. There were a bunch of cosplayers that were really good and had nice choice for characters to portray. Like this one. I present THE War Machine guy! yeah!

Due to my private life as an online gamer, I only attended the second day of the convention. I was not disappointed at all. I still had fun and saw lots of great cosplayers roaming around the fifth floor of SM Megamall (trying to get away from the security guard’s yell of ‘bawal po tumambay dito’ LOL).

For this convention, I was really surprised that women cosplayers are stepping up the notch! wew!I saw a mecca cosplayer (gundam to be exact) which I initially thought was cosplayed by a man - was actually a girl! It was not a full mecca outfit wherein you have a helmet on and none of your skin is exposed. Nonetheless, it was awesome! Two thumbs up to that girl! (whoever you are >.<)

Another amazing cosplayer (wish I had pictures of them eeks!),I saw a DOTA character (Mortred so to speak) which was again cosplayed by a girl. I am not a fan of DOTA nor do I play it but I find her really elegant in a way that she obviously put an effort in making her armor and other props. Really looks intense. Makes me think that maybe I should try playing the game just to see that character’s skills >:).

Now, making my way outside the halls, I had only one thing in mind - ‘man! this floor is so crowded!’. Whichever direction I look, it’s either a cosplayer or a con-goer (plus the photographers!).

Oh yeah! Alodia was there together with her sister Ashley. As usual Alodia had done a great job on her costume and props. Perfectly amazing! However, I was not that excited to see them at all since it was already day 2 because she was already present since day 1. So there I was lurking around the grounds for unpopular yet good amateur cosplayers making their way into the scene. IMO, they are way more fun to look after to and admire. Seeing their development from past conventions to the present.

To sum it all up, the event was successful in some way. Apparently, it was a rainy day so maybe if it weren’t, a whole bunch of people may have add up to the total of the attendees - which if added up would result to thousands of people (imagine the mass of body heat >:D). TOYCON got better than last year’s event (according to my source hoho - i didn’t got the chance to attend last year’s event) and I would like to expect that it will be better next year! can’t hardly wait for it >.<

The New Generation of Cosplayers

Today, cosplay is making its way into the mainstream. However, icons for cosplay has always been directed to the same veteran cosplayers such as Alodia.

Therefore, this is my attempt to introduce fresh new faces into the world of cosplay. They may have been around for a couple of months or years, however, they are not seen nor accepted to be equals of the well known icons of the community. IMO, they are as good as the veterans. So much more, they could be even better than them if they had a chance to an equal fight on catwalks or skits during conventions. I’ve seen a handful of cosplayers that had great details done on their costumes. Furthermore, the fact that they are good in their current state (still honing their skills as newbies) makes them even better than the veterans. You see, if they are already good at this moment, how much more if they have already mastered the craft?

I had attended several cons in the past with my colleagues and seen known faces in the cosplay community and those who are not.

Here are some of the fresh new faces that I’m talking about who are good in their own way :P (hope you like them too!)

First off, the stunning CC/Rinoa cosplayer Ms. Jeyel Tecson. I say she nailed it! from the costume details to poses and actions at the cons. Saw her again at the last con I went to. I was like … woah! .. (she did a crossplay - Ciel) .. and guess what? she also nailed it! even better! liked this one rather than the first two mentioned. A very detailed costume I must say. In addition to this, I think I have not yet seen another Ciel with the same costume as hers?? Anyways, back to my idol, what can I say about her? By all means, these are all my opinion hehe. Well, she’s very approachable. She tries to accommodate all who wants their picture taken with her as she can. It’s hard to smile for a whole day (good thing though, her characters don’t even smirk LOL), picture yourself doing it hehe, you’ll know it’s difficulty level (not to mention THE poses :P).

We have another one, it’s rare to find good looking guys hoho. I present the gorgeous Lelouch/Squall cosplayer Mr. Kyosuke Fukuzumi. Man! this guy has different faces!. I wonder how he does it??? For different characters that I’ve seen him cosplay, it seems like he evolves from one human being into another. Amazing!. Flexibility is one characteristic that is hard to find in cosplayers. IMO (again), I think he suits as a cosplayer because of his well-defined physical characteristics and abilities to portray a character. Once on the floor, I feel that he’s on the groove >:). Not much to say eh :| .. he’s a very warm guy. BTW, they’re a couple, this guy and the first entry hoho. nice pair eh!

Next stop! .. the dashing Shizuka cosplayer Ms. Kimberly Empestan . My my, this one is really cool. She’s not only a cosplayer but she also has an online shop for costumes. I even had some of my costumes made by her >:). What can I say? The quality scores A high!. Back to her being a cosplayer, hmm.. She just recently went out in the scene but she’s damn good!. I say she has a natural talent for this kind of hobby. I really have nothing much to say about her because I don’t see her often at cons but I’ve seen a lot of her pictures in the net. They are all pretty good. She portrays her characters really well. A very down-to-earth girl so to speak.

My Auddiction

A certified Online Gamer! yup, that’s me! I’m recently starting to get addicted (again) to this online game called ‘Audition’ from e-games. It is an online dance battle game wherein you have to use your ‘num pad’ (for 8 keys) or arrow keys (for 4 keys) plus either the control or space bar in game. You may also dress up your character in different attires. From the hair, face, upper and lower garments down to the shoes! You may also add different items and accessories to your character such as wings, platforms, pets, hand held items, etc. A totally customized character of your own choice.

Another thing about this game is that you could have a couple and even marry your partner, which is represented by a ring. There are also different modes and types of game such as normal (d8, d4, c4, c8, c9, etc.), sports dance, B-Boy, UBP, etc. It also has great sounds wherein the beats would really get you into the groove of dancing.

I currently have 5 accounts: 3 boys and 2 girls. Two of which are married. My highest rank so far is Amateur (level 25). According to my source, you could reach a high ranking character (level 60 up) in two years, that is if you play almost everyday. Before you go to the next level, you will have to do a licensing exam. Depending on your level, the song beat and requirements varies.

For me, this game has helped a lot in relieving some of my stressful days. I would it recommend this game to anyone. Being an ‘Audista’, as what we are called, has enhanced my hand and eye coordination and accuracy skills. So why not try it?! It would not only quench your thirst for games but also enhance your skills :). A big thumbs up to this game!

Recently, I was invited by my friend for a photo shoot. In connection to my last post, yes! it is about cosplay. To be more exact, I was invited to choreograph poses for the cosplayers. It was actually my first time and hell I was really not comfortable with it. First, I didn’t know some of the people involved in the shoot. Second, I wasn’t really comfortable ordering people around. Anyways, halfway through, my stiffness turned into something creative. The neurons in my brain started to work and I was indeed acting as a director. It was fun. I never really expected that I could make poses that are of good quality. I am an amateur so to speak. At least, thanks to that experience, one of my skills was honed. I hope that I would get better at this. No! I should say, I will be better at this. It’s time that I should get out of my shell and be one of those butterflies which looks good to look after to. I’m ready! And I’m driven with passion to succeed in this area. So should you =)

Getting Into It (A Cosplay Filled Adventure) - my first act

Influenced by a couple of my friends, who are by the way very artistic in a creative way, I began to develop the sense of exploring something which is the evolution of my addiction to the world of anime and games.
Cosplaying is the name and role playing is the game. I was driven to try this new innovation in the world of anime, games, etc. There were a lot of things that were needed to be done and acquired. First was making your costume, which is literally not in my set of abilities, so I had to order it from someone who was highly experienced in dressmaking. Second, accessories are very important. This is the soul of your costume. Never underestimate the power of a single button. From the very simplest to the most detailed effects can enhance the beauty of ones costume. Lastly, knowing your character. It could never be called cosplaying if you don’t know who you are acting out. It’s like being a member of your drama club and a big production is soon to come. You practice your piece and with all your desire to deliver of what is to be expected, you learn your character’s ways and you start to envision yourself to be exactly (as you can) who you are trying to copy. It was not a simple task but alas, combining your artistic skills and effort, voila! a dream come true. You have witnessed your favorite character come to life and the best part of it is, it is you.
